Packaging Configurator
When production BOM structures are defined with Food Manufacturing & Distribution's basic process manufacturing functionality, it is possible to set up item records and associated BOMs for both intermediate materials and finished goods. By defining the production and packaging activities that are required to manufacture a finished item as separate processes, a company can streamline production when dealing with a number of finished goods that share a common intermediate.
The Packaging Configurator presents the user with an alternative method of establishing this relationship. You can set up an item record for a manufactured item, then define item variants for the different configurations in which the item is packaged for sale. If you have a number of items that share common packaging materials, you can set up a package BOM that lists these components, then associate this BOM to any applicable item variant. Packaging components that are unique to specific item variants are identified at the variant level. For this reason, the Packaging Configurator is most useful in environments where a single intermediate item has a wide variety of packaging options.
The following table describes a sequence of tasks, with links to the topics that describe them. These tasks are listed in the order in which they are generally performed.
