How to create a container

Container types must be set up for items before you can assign them to a container. The system returns an error if you try to place an item on a container for which no container type has been assigned.

When creating a container, some fields are mandatory, some optional, and some informational.

Steps

  1. In the search box, enter Containers, and then choose the related link.
  2. On the Home tab, in the New group, choose New to create a container card.
  3. Fill in the fields on the card. The following fields are required:
Field Description
Id Specifies the number of the record in the number series of container cards.
License Plate A unique number identifying the container. By default the license plate equals the ID. You can enter a different license plate number. This is usually done when containers are uniquely identifiable and traceable, that is, for serialized containers.
Inbound Select this field if the container will be linked to an inbound receipt.
Container Type Code Specifies the container type the container belongs to. The container type determines whether the container is tracked through inventory, maintains inventory value, and needs to be tracked through a serial number.
Description A free description of the container, automatically filled with the description of the Container Type Code.
Container Serial No. If the Container Type Code states that the container is serializable, enter the serial number of the container. This serial number must be available in inventory for the stated location. It is not necessary to move the container to the desired bin. Food tracks containers per location, but not whether containers are available in a specific bin. Once a container moves to a bin-controlled location, all bins in that location can use the available containers.
Location Code If you work with locations, enter the location code where the container is used.
Bin Code If you work in a bin-controlled environment, enter the bin code where the container is used. When putting items on the container, the system checks whether the container and the items are in the same bin.
